The Fenway Park crowd welcomed former Red Sox third baseman back to Boston in typical fashion: with plenty of boos.

Devers, who played parts of nine seasons for the Red Sox between 2017-25, returned to Fenway on Friday for the first time since being traded to the San Francisco Giants last June.

He received some cheers from fans across the ballpark in his first at-bat in the top of the first inning, but he largely heard boos.

Listen to Red Sox fans make their feelings known toward Devers:

Before the game, Devers said to reporters he wasn’t sure whether the Fenway crowd would cheer for him or boo him when he stepped up to the plate.

Ultimately, it wasn’t 100 percent boos, but the majority of fans who used their voice did not cheer.

Devers’s at-bat ended in a looking strikeout on four pitches.

Between the first and second inning, however, Fenway showed a compilation video showing highlights from Devers’s Red Sox career, and fans were much more respectful during that moment.

Devers acknowledged the crowd from the dugout with a smile on his face.

The 29-year-old had nothing but good things to say about Red Sox fans when speaking with the media pregame.

“Simply want to say, thank you very much for all the support they gave me for my years here,” Devers said when asked if he had a message for Red Sox fans. “They will be always special in my heart.”
